Space Cluster Meetup in Tromsø, 15-16th of April

In a significant step forward for the Norwegian space industry, the Norwegian Space Cluster held its first in-person meeting in Tromsø on April 15th and 16th, 2024. About 30 members and collaborators joined the meeting to explore critical topics ranging from geopolitical security to commercial opportunities in space, including start-up companies, universities and RnD, public sector organisations and established companies.

Day one commenced with a warm welcome and a presentation round, setting the stage for a series of insightful discussions. Ole Morten Olsen, representing the Norwegian Space Agency, delved into the intersection of space exploration and geopolitical security, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in ensuring the peaceful and sustainable use of space.

Following a light lunch, Karstein Ringjord from KSAT held a thematic lectures addressing maritime safety and security, as well as challenges and innovations in safeguarding maritime activities through space-based technologies. Afterwards Tom Grydeland from Norce and Pål Ellingsen from UiT shed light on the pressing issue of space debris and explored the threats posed by space debris and proposed solutions to mitigate its impact.

The day culminated in a workshop where participants brainstormed new and existing solutions to the challenges facing the space industry. A summary of the day's discussions laid the groundwork for continued collaboration and innovation.

In the evening the participants gathered for a three-course dinner at Clarion the Edge to socialize and get to know eachother better.

Day two commenced with a fresh welcome and presentations highlighting the latest initiatives in earth observation and commercialization. Pål Julius Skogholt, politician and board member at JOBS AS provided insights into the planned National Center for Earth Observation AS (JOBS AS) and Arctic Phi Lab's contributions to environmental monitoring and resource management. Stefan Gustafsson from the ESA Commercialization Department outlined the agency's ScaleUp program and its role in fostering commercial ventures in space exploration.

Attendees were treated to inspirational lectures from Karl-Christian Agerup of Antler & NATO Innovation Fund and Thomas Leira of Vake, who shared their perspectives on investment opportunities within the space industry. The day concluded with a summary of key takeaways and a reaffirmation of the commitment to advancing Norway's presence in space.

With fruitful discussions and promising collaborations, the Norwegian Space Cluster's inaugural in-person meeting marked a significant milestone in the nation's journey towards becoming a key player in the global space arena. As participants departed with renewed enthusiasm and a shared vision for the future, the event served as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in shaping the future of space exploration.
